About La Poza Nature Reserve

La Poza Nature Reserve is located in the municipality of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, along the island’s northwestern coast. This protected coastal site encompasses mangrove wetlands, rocky shorelines, tidal pools, and sandy beaches, supporting a diverse range of plant and animal species. The reserve provides essential habitat for migratory birds, including shorebirds and wading species, making it a significant birdwatching destination. Its coastal waters and wetlands create a unique ecosystem where salt-tolerant vegetation thrives and marine life flourishes in tidal pools. Historically, the area has been influenced by indigenous Taíno use and later by local fishing communities, adding cultural value to the natural landscape. Key recreational activities include birding, low-impact hiking on informal paths, nature photography, and shore exploration. Visitors are drawn to the scenic views of the Caribbean Sea, peaceful atmosphere, and the opportunity to observe wildlife in a largely undisturbed environment. The reserve’s proximity to the town of Aguadilla makes it accessible while still offering a natural retreat away from urban development. La Poza is also important for environmental education and local conservation efforts focused on preserving coastal ecosystems and protecting native species.
